Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in America, is an actress and rapper. In film, music and television Queen Latifah is the recipient of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and nominations for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced after Latifah was ten years old. was ten years old. Latifah lived in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic word which means "delicate and compassionate". Her aunt bestowed it on her in the age of eight. Always tall, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward for her basketball team in high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah is among the first members of the Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the track. The singer signed Latifah and then released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
